My Irish mother had a saying: "The small potatoes fill you up." A little bit from a whole lot can add up to something big.
Kevin Kelly of The Technium calls it having 1,000 True Fans.
In his article 1,000 True Fans, Kelly shares an interesting idea: find enough folks who will spend at least $100 a year in support of what you do, and you can make some decent coin. He writes:
"A creator, such as an artist, musician, photographer, craftsperson, performer, animator, designer, videomaker, or author - in other words, anyone producing works of art - needs to acquire only 1,000 True Fans to make a living."
More:
"Assume conservatively that your True Fans will each spend one day's wages per year in support of what you do. That 'one-day-wage' is an average, because of course your truest fans will spend a lot more than that. Let's peg that per diem each True Fan spends at $100 per year. If you have 1,000 fans that sums up to $100,000 per year, which minus some modest expenses, is a living for most folks."
How can this same idea work for the small business owner or consultant?
Take your expertise and turn the advice into
* e-books
* webinars
* online classes, or
* paid gateway content areas.
Or, put all your advice online, and sell paid advertisements throughout the hundred and hundreds of pages of content you are offering to the public for free.
This body of knowledge can also lead to additional consulting work.
