Mary Gillen clues us in on a free tool you can use for news on how to improve website performance.

Larry Chase and Eileen Shulock, publisher and managing editor of Web Digest for Marketers, asked me to have a look at a web site optimization tool they discovered, and to take it for a test spin.

I found the Web Page Analyzer - 0.961 - from Website Optimization to be way fun in a geekazoid kinda-way...and very helpful.

Simply enter a URL here to calculate page size, composition, and download time. The script calculates the size of individual elements and sums up each type of web page component. Based on these page characteristics the script then offers advice on how to improve page load time. The script incorporates best practices from HCI research (page should load in under 8.6 seconds) and web site optimization techniques into its recommendations.
